World Health Organization Issues Report On Mold And Water Damaged Homes

On July 16, 2009, the World Health Organization (“W.H.O.”) published their most recent study on the association between damp environments and health effects on humans. The study concluded that elevated levels of moisture in indoor environments can lead to the growth of mold, fungi and bacteria. In turn, thes growths release spores and volatile organic compounds into the air. Therefore, elevated moisture levels have been shown to be a “strong, consistent indicator of risk of asthma and respiratory symptoms.”

The W.H.O. recognized certain shifts that are increasing an individual to dampness and mold. These factors included:

Measures to conserve energy not properly implemented.
Climate change
Urbanization
Degradation in construction materials.
